MLA Citation Style

MLA citation style was created by the Modern Language Association.  It is most commonly used for citing sources in the Humanities, which includes: Art, Architecture, Literature, English, History, etc.

APA Citation Style

APA citation style was created by the American Psychological Association Association.  It is most commonly used for citing sources in the Social Sciences, which includes: Psychology, Sociology, Education, etc. It is also often used in Business courses.

Chicago Style

Chicago citation style was created by the University of Chicago.  It is commonly used for citing sources in History and occasionally in the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences. Many Philosophy and History classes at FSU require this style. Chicago style has two formats:

  • The Notes and Bibliography style is preferred by many in humanities disciplines, including history, literature, philosophy, and the arts. Citations are provided in footnotes or endnotes and are usually accompanied by a bibliography. This is the Chicago style format most frequently used at FSU.

  • The Author-Date style (sometimes called "Reference List" style) is recommended for the physical, natural, and social sciences. Sources are cited using parenthetical in-text citation and full details are provided in a reference or works cited list.

Free Citation Managers

Citation managers are software that help you collect, organize, share, and cite sources that you find. You can add all types of sources to a citation manager—like articles, books, interviews, videos, and more. Many citation managers offer plugins or extensions so you can quickly add sources from library databases, catalogs, and websites from within a browser. Once you have sources added, you can then organize them within the citation manager using tags, lists, and folders. Then, with the click of a button, you can often add those sources as citations within your paper, and at the end of your paper, generate a reference list automatically!
