Depository Information

The Lewis J. Ort Library serves as a depository for both federal and state government documents. As the primary federal depository library in Western Maryland, the library is charged with providing the citizens of Maryland's three westernmost counties (Washington, Allegany, and Garrett) with federal government information and resources.

The library has participated in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) since 1967.  As a "selective" depository, the Ort Library collected approximately 30% of all government publications available from the Government Publishing Office focusing on documents relevant to FSU curriculum and to the communities we serve. Since February 2024, the FDLP moved to a primarily digital program with a limited list of publications provided for selected depositories. (Limited Print Distribution Framework).

In addition, the library also collects selected Maryland state documents and houses an extensive collection of historic US Geological Survey maps, folded maps, and atlases.

Finding Documents

You can search for most of our government documents collection using by searching in our discovery system, SearchCat, and filtering the search results to  publication type = government documents.

Most Federal print documents and microforms are located in the Government Documents Collection on floor two of the library and are arranged by Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification numbers. The map collection is located in the large map cases on floor two.

Many Maryland State documents are also cataloged.  These are integrated into the library's main collection and arranged by Library of Congress call number.  Less widely-used state documents and temporary/uncataloged items, newsletters, brochures, and public hearings are housed in cabinets in the Government Documents Collection on floor two. These can be searched by reviewing the Maryland Documents Finding Aid.

Public Access

All patrons are free to use the government documents and maps in the library, and patrons with a library card can check out most documents. Community users with a photo ID may obtain a library card at the circulation desk at no charge. For more information contact the circulation desk at (301) 687-4395.
